US Postal Service to Unveil Stamp in The Halloween Capital of the World

halloween-postage-US-2016-Pumpkin-stamps

Late last year the United States Postal service revealed that they will be producing a Halloween set of forever stamps featuring photographs of four carved pumpkins in the spirit of the Fall holiday.

This week they released word that the stamps would make their debut in self proclaimed ‘Halloween Capital of the World,’ Anoka,  Minnesota, which celebrates the holiday with events like large parades, a fitness walk and a house decorating contest.

Choosing Anoka might have been a no brainer for the Postal Service, as the town has an interesting history with the holiday that has gone on for almost one hundred years…

A ‘Whopper’ of a New Star for Halloween 2015

burger-king-halloween-whopper-and-sexy-green-poop-halloween-

Halloween is that time of year when we all get to be a little weird.

We get to dress up and play pretend and if your of the right age (and sometimes not), you can go door to door for sugar drenched sweets that have no nutritional value and if you believe the legends could also be poisoned as well.

Everything in moderation is good including the strange and the horrifying but sometimes these things can go too far.

The ‘Halloween Whopper‘ from fast food monolith Burger King and the rampant press over the fact that the specialty burger can make one’s poop turn green is one such example of this sort of indulgence taken beyond it’s proper limit.

For instance, you cab now attend the Halloween party of your choice dressed not as a ghost, witch or black cat, but also as the burger in question along with it’s green aftermath.

Candy Man: The Truth Behind Poisoned Halloween Candy Scares

picsay-1414667226

If you grew up in the last half century or so, the tradition of checking your Halloween candy after coming home from Trick or Treating was a commonplace event of your childhood.

There could be a razor blade stuck in your Taffy Apple or a loose wrapper on your peanut butter cup that may mean poison.

Like most things though, especially those connected to a holiday like Halloween, truth is often stranger (and sometimes scarier) then fiction.

The first question is: Has a child ever died from candy connected to the holiday of Halloween?

Yes.

That fact stated, the truth behind the fear of a murderer targeting children through poisoned holiday sweets is a bit more complex and interesting…

Is Your Halloween Decor Worth 50K?

hh

It may only be June and we have yet to even pass the Fourth of July, but ABC and Fremantle Media are already thinking about October and all the spookiness that comes with it.

The production company is looking for Halloween yard displays and amateur walk through attractions to feature in a new Fright Night reality show which has yet to be named.

Similar to the show The Great Christmas Light Fight, the show will focus on finding the best Halloween decor and give the lucky winner fifty-thousand dollars for their efforts.

Now that is a treat!

Interested parties can email the production company here:

Happy Haunting and good luck!

Seattle Kids Part of Halloween Experiment in 1976

tricktreat2

Halloween is a time for some creepy urban legends, most of which are more fiction then fact.

Recently, I wrote about my own Halloween related childhood urban legend for the Dolphin Talk newspaper out of Seadrift, Texas. It involved a reported ‘Witch’ who pulled kids inside her house when they went Trick or Treating.

This of course, was all hogwash, rubbish and fantasy.

It has been said however that truth can be stranger then fiction.

A recent post by the excellent website IO9 brought to light a psychological experiment conducted by researchers on Trick or Treaters in Seattle, Washington in the Fall of 1976.

Planning a Halloween Party (in 1911)

The Big Séance

As many of you are no doubt planning themes for Halloween get-togethers next month, I thought maybe Ms. Ruby Ross Goodnow could help you plan. Actually, the party below, held on “Hallowe’en” at “eight o’ clock” in 1911, was also meant to be a housewarming party, for a brand new home, perhaps a bungalow or craftsman like the one pictured below. I found this article, originally published in the October 1911 issue of The Delineator, a few years ago and I just love it! (Note that a yearly subscription was $1. Sweet!) I’m considering planning a Halloween get together myself, and using this retro article as a starting point for a turn of the century theme!

31 Days: Vampires

NosferatuShadow

Of all the supernatural creatures that are known about, I reckon that Vampires are quite possibly the most well known.

The literary creation of John William Polidari (one time physician to Lord Byron) and popularized by Bram Stoker, the Vampire has blazed a trail through books, movies, cartoons, comics and theater productions for much of the 20th century and is still going strong in the 21st. YA fiction in particular has adopted the vampire with gusto, turning them from blood sucking horrors that lurk in the night to sexy, angst ridden anti heroes. Needless to say, everyone knows all about Vampires.

Halloween Videos # 1: Halloween Pranks

I was trying to think of something simple yet cool to post today as I am way too tired from work to try and do anything ‘heavy’.
